Unit of Instruction

This is a unit of instruction for 2nd/3rd grade based around the concept of "hope."  Below you can find a parent letter addressing what will be learned.

Underneath the parent letter includes all the components of my unit, including lesson plans, games, and more.

Dear Parents,

Our class will be doing a unit of instruction centered around the theme and concept of “hope.”  Hope is a very important concept for your child to understand.

Hope is defined as:

*A feeling that what is wanted is likely to happen; desire accompanied by expectation.
*Trust or reliance.

Everyone is or has been hopeful about something in their life and talking about “hope” can bring optimism, while instilling a positive attitude in your child.

In this unit, there are required activities as well as various options.  Since every child learns differently (visually, artistically, reading, listening, etc), I have included various ways and methods to learn and process both the information content, as well as the concept of hope.  I expect the class to do very well with this unit.

The books I intend to include are as follows (based on different reading levels):

Fly Away Home by Eve Bunting
Sarah, Plain and Tall by Patricia MacLachlan
The Tin Forest by Helen Ward
Beatrice’s Goat by Page McBrier
Someday by Allison McGhee

All of these books have stories of hope, potential of life, optimism, and happiness.  These will be used for the lesson on the paper bag book report, which you will receive a separate letter about.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,

Miss Lindsay Hughes
